Dental Benefits: Understanding Your Patients' Dental Benefits (2 MCE Lecture Credits)

Dr. Ian Lerner is an alumnus of Emory University’s School of Dentistry. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer
Science from Emory College. Dr. Lerner maintains a private practice in Fort Greene section of Brooklyn and Oceanside, New York.

Dr. Lerner developed this course while serving on the NYSDA’s Council on Dental Benefits. He is presently a member of the NYSDA’s Council on
Governmental Affairs and looks forward to his presidency of the Second District Dental Society in 2007.

Dr. Lerner personally thanks Dr. Richard Herman, Dr. Andrew Vorrasi, and Dr. Judith Shub for guidance in developing this course and the New York
State Dental Foundation for making it available online.

Dr. Lerner dedicates this course to his professor, Dr. Tom Limoli (1924-2006), who taught students that dentistry means business.

This course gives a detailed explanation of dental benefits, plan provisions and the various types of plans your patients may participate in. Proper
claim submissions are discussed as well as the possible results of fraud and abuse.

At the end of this course you will be able to:

  • Recognize plan limitations used by benefit providers to limit their financial liability
  • Explain how dental benefits help patients access dental treatment
